Madrid travel guide

Madrid is a lively capital, less touristy than Barcelona but just as rich: world-class museums like the Prado, a compact historic centre you can explore on foot, and a nightlife that starts late and doesn't stop. It's also a great base for day trips to Toledo or Segovia.

Best time to visit

April-May and September-October are the ideal months: pleasant weather while avoiding both winter cold and summer heat, which in July and August can top 35°C.

What to see and do

Prado Museum and Reina Sofía — two of Europe's most important art collections.
Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor — the historic, monumental heart of the city.
Mercado de San Miguel — covered market, great for sampling different tapas in one place.
Retiro Park — a large city park, perfect for a break or a boat ride.
Day trip to Toledo — under an hour by train, a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Indicative budget

Budget roughly €60-90 per day per person for food, accommodation and local transport, flights excluded — Madrid remains cheaper than London or Paris for a comparable standard.

Getting around

Madrid's metro is among the most extensive in Europe and efficiently covers every part of the city; the historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot regardless. A multi-day tourist ticket is worth it if you'll be making several trips a day.

Where to stay

Sol and Centro put everything a step away but are the most touristy areas; Malasaña and Chueca have a younger vibe, with bars and nightlife; Salamanca is elegant and quiet, great for shopping; La Latina is perfect if you want authentic tapas bars and a more local feel.
